It was once said that happiness does not lie on the outside condition, but the condition within you, no matter what the situation is.
Being blessed with great things may just be a bonus, and keeping intrinsic qualities within you will truly define your happiness on case to case basis. So, what does it really mean to be happy?
Be optimistic. Even if you feel that you are in a dire or hopeless situation, you must remember that there is always a silver lining in every cloud. If for example you just lost your job, do not sit in one corner and be glum all day thinking how unlucky or worthless, or whatever negative things you might think. Try to accomplish things that will make you or your community happy. Clean the house, organize your room, or help your family members while searching for your next job.
Get entertainment for free. When you say you need a particular entertainment at one point, first thing people will think of is money. You need to spend to be entertained and eventually become happy. Yet, people miss the point that there are really a lot of things that can make you happy without spending too much, or spending at all. Go for a walk, eat cheap ice cream, call or visit your friends, or play with your pets. The most important thing is the quality of the experience, not the cost.
Spend time with loved ones. People are among the most important things we can have in our lives. Instead of spending too much time on the computer, shopping, or other dead immaterial things, cherish your moment with loved ones. Cook for your family, shop for your parents, or have coffee with friends. Talking with people you value is one sure thing that would take the blues away.
